Urban Living – Medium Density Residential

Key to this concept is the busy and urban nature of the site. Situated on a high traffic road this 1000m2 site has potential to be subdivided to offer multiple residential units. As the road is located on the north face of the site, it was a challenge to reduce the amount of space taken up by vehicle access, while still giving some outdoor north facing living space area.

The solution to this was to create an internal courtyard space to each individual units. This gives a private outdoor living area which faces north which gives solar gain opportunities to the living and sleeping spaces. The garage (which faces north) has been used to enclose the private courtyard, providing much needed shade to this courtyard in summer. An additional north facing deck is located off the lounge space facing the street.

To keep options open for the developer each unit is separated by a fire wall. The solid block fire wall also forms a privacy barrier to each internal courtyard. These units could be retained as investment properties and rented out ,or ultimately subdivided off and sold as freehold units.

The materials for this project are vertical profiled metal and horizontal cedar. The metal roofing and cladding are low maintenance materials and using the same profile for both the roof and wall cladding offers some cost savings during construction. Horizontal cedar has been chosen to offer a softer element to the urban environment. Low level native planting is used as a softer green element and to define the deck on the northern face. A "floating" deck leads up to the door.

This Architectural concept was a feasibility study for a developer to look at what would be possible on his site.
